What's the meaning behind the band's name? Olio- Miscellaneous collection of music or literary works.
What's the message to transmit with your music?? honesty. we have to be true to ourselves in order to be true to the listener. we write about Life - love, loss, social issues, sex, relationships, things that annoy us, whatever is happening in our lives or in the world around us.
What's your method at the time of witting a song?? there are a couple of ways we do it. 1) we just jam out ideas. get in a room and play! & see what pops, then Arif or myself takes whichever ideas we liked and we start to write melodies and lyrics to them. 2) one of us already has a musical idea and melodies and maybe even lyrics and then we bring it to the rest of the band to begin shaping it and putting the "Olio" thing on it. either way the process ends up the same, a piece of music that has that "Olio" sound and feel and we all had a part in creating it.
Which is your music influences?? anything & everything but to be specific, artists like: Led Zeppelin, Prince, The Police, Sting, Sade, Black Sabbath, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, The Beatles. shall i go on? i think u guys get the picture ;)
What plans do you guys have for the future?? right now we are writing and in pre-production for our 5th release. hopefully for early 2011. we are still gigging and promoting Olio. we really want to do some regional touring soon. playing in front of people is our first love. make some more music videos and keep building the fan base.
Which has been the funniest prank you guys have been or took part while on tour or after a show?? we're really not pranksters but for what ever reason, it never fails, after a great show or while on a long gig, there is always some knuckle-head who is drunk or just stupid, who wants to talk with one of us and not leave that person alone. so we always wonder, "...ok, who's it gonna be tonight?!" i prefer it to be Arif because he's the nice one, haha!!!
If you guys were stranded in the middle of nowhere after a show or while on tour. The help is 65 miles away from where you guys are, ¿Who would you guys send to look for help? And if while the rest wait, there's no food and the only way to feed yourself is by eating each other, ¿Who would you eat first? well, since there is cannibalism involved, i'll go for help and let Arif & Matt figure it out... Hahahaha!!!!
Which country you guys would love to play? too many to choose from, Brazil is definitely one, Japan, Germany and any of the Nordic countries.
With which bands you guys would love to share stage?? John Mayer, Maroon 5, P!nk, Goo Goo Dolls, Sting, Seal, Sade, Santana, Prince, Robert Randolph, The Stones, Dave Matthews Band, Eric Clapton, Boon Jovi and the list goes on.........
Are you guys OK, with the direction the band is going actually? we are very much OK! being a 3-piece again has really given back our true voice. it allows for a different type of creativity, especially because we don't do the typical power rock, three chord stuff. it challenge's us to be better musicians and write better songs and yet it makes us sound and feel totally different than the majority on the bands out there.
How the band started?? back 1997, I (DeHaven) was playing for a Alt. Soul singer. we needed some subs for a regular gig we were doing and that's how i met Arif (guitar) & Tony (original bassist). long story short, they told me about their project and that they needed a drummer. we rehearsed about 25-30 original songs to get ready for a gig in Mammoth. at that time we were called Vivid but due to some unforeseen circumstances we had to change the name. Arif found "Olio" and it fit perfectly, considering the style of music we were creating. fast fwd to the year 2003, Tony left the band, we then worked as a 5-piece for awhile and then life happened...marriage, kids, jobs....finally got back to work in 2007 working on new material. we started looking for bass players and found this incredible kat outta Chicago, Matt Sherrell. We have been rolling strong ever since. back to our roots, a 3-piece like no other!
